Who is the Proverbs 31 Woman? Part 5

She is not afraid of snow for her household,
For all her household is clothed with scarlet.
She makes tapestry for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies sashes for the merchants.
Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.
She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all.”
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands,
And let her own works praise her in the gates.

Proverbs 31:21-31

The virtuous woman is not afraid of her household being exposed to the elements of the world; weather or worldview. Her family is well-clothed, and covered in the cleansing blood of Christ (clothed in scarlet). She aids them as they prepare to face the world in God’s strength, knowing His truths and commands.

“She makes tapestry for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple”

v. 22

She wears good quality clothes, too, not appearing to be a martyr for her family. Fine linen and purple were both used to build the tabernacle in the Old Testament. She understands that her body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and treats it accordingly.

“Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.”

v. 23

She builds up a good reputation for her husband. He is a respectable man who has the wisdom to sit in the gates with the city elders. This is a position of authority and respect, because these elders are the ones that settle disputes. Her husband is a wise leader. She is known by him, and he by her.

“She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies sashes for the merchants.”

v. 24

She has a thriving business that extends even to the traveling merchants. She deals honestly and with good merchandise She is an able-bodied worker and businesswoman.

“Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.”

v. 25

The virtuous woman is clothed in (known for) strength and honor. Honor can be translated: magnificence, splendor, beauty, excellence, glory, majesty. This word also describes the character of God in 1 Chronicles 16:27. In other words, she is known for reflecting God’s character and standing strong in it. Having godly character brings her joy. She is strong and honorable. Honor begins at home, and strength is gained there. God will see her as a servant good and faithful.
